Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains

  • Very thin on the ground though there are a few surfwear stores in the town open in the summer - otherwise it is off to Braunton for the likes of Hunter, Saltrock and others 0r Barnstaple which has a reasonable mix of local independent and chain stores
  • Dressed 2 Kill and Storm are good!
  • All over the High St
  • There is an Oxfam shop and most of the residents could do worse than browse some of the cast offs. I've seen better dressed Afghan refugess than the average Insularcombe wurzel.
  • Sorry Giorgio only... kappa is still seen as a bit posh

Arts, crafts and such (Anything from pukka art galleries to craft shops. Trendy and twee both welcome.)

  • most of these down the seafront.
  • Damien Hirst's restaurant on the pier has some of his art in it
  • A few local galleries but none that are particularly cutting edge. Dovetails for local artists but the quality can be naff; otherwise there's a small gallery on The Quay which sells mostly limited edition prints with sea themes
  • Damien Hirst, artist owns restaurant on Quay, 5 art galleries in town as well as art club on Seafront...dozens of "alternative life style places"..a coven etc see live music scene for contacts
  • Cave painting has yet to catch on here.
  • An absolute meccas for collectors of 'rampant mackerel ashtrays' 'bird houses made from coconuts' and other such modern treasures.

Magazine and Comic Shops

  • Jeffries has a good range of filth
  • Quayhole Newsagents The Chocolate Box
  • jeffries, Richardsons there the main ones.
  • all the magazines that any tramp with a dirty mind could hope for

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Ilfracombe. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Ilfracombe.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
