Food

  • Gregg's and Peters for a pastie
  • Tandoori Night in Houghton has the best curries, they have won awards and everything. Pizza Dial in Houghton does the best kebabs but their pizzas are now so thick they are more like dodgy quiches to look at! Best restaurant is without a doubt Benitos, the italians in Newbottle which used to be the Queens Head. The staff are very welcoming and the food is fantastic and not too expensive if you want a cheap romantic date!
  • Peefer were the ginga evo sniffers nock a bout ne names though renni nd joe, Not 2 mention the burnside dogs with the ginga hair they call blonde (CAINY). jst stroll down burnside hill just along from peefer and you might see al the binge drinkers with the leader of the mera peak crew our Scott F stoned to bitz of his 2 hit wonder lung.
  • plenty of blood and snots on the floor outside the brit
  • pizza dial and bhaji. Takes your breath away when you walk into bhaji. And makes your eyes water
  • PIZZA DIAL (5120906) BEST PIZZA SHOP IN HOUGHTON BY FAR
  • What has happened to the grub at the Silver Grid ? Good job Grasswell isnot too far.
  • peters greggs coop etc
  • Silver grid which is mainly fish and chips, i do recomned the battered mars bars though. Dont order from pizza park what ever you do because they always mess it up! your better off going there and getting it yourseld because the thin crust pizzas are lush! pizza dial is the place to go if you have the munchies and have just come back from the town.
  • Bogies was the place to be but now its gone. Gotta get to Greggs!
  • MACCY D'S BURGER KING BY DICK
  • the highlight of houghton. exellent for tandoori, chinese, pizzas/kebabs, chippies etc. lack of mexican food now that chilton moor stopped doing burritos, but if u like thai food, the highfield lodge at east rainton does eat in and take away but doesnt deliver.
  • the sun at newbottle is quite popular for meals
  • Kebabs and all kinds of shit at shit prices. The chinkeys's are nice
  • May Ho Chinese Takeaway, next to the Job Centre. Sivler Grid, over the road from the new Library.
  • We have everything including, fish and chips, Indian and Pizzas.
  • Greggs Bakery. If you want something cheap and easy to eat go here. Also note that the Kappa Slappers always found in this shop are just like the food.
  • greggs-where the school kids eat nothing but greggs pasties and drink blue pop
  • i think dees is a canny chippe especially when he has them 10 pound specials on where u get 2 10 inch pizas of any choice a 10 inch garlic bread a tray of kebab meat and a tray of chips and a bottle of pop aswell
  • Wheatleys: guaranteed to sell sweets you've not seen anywhere else for 25 years
  • Sweaty Betties chippy is not bad.
  • The Burn do a lovely meal, but a ready-made frozen from Kwik Save is a lot cheaper.
  • Lovelys does nice chips with salt and sore finger.
  • Excellent fish and chips at Grasswell, up the bank a bit. Two or three surprisingly good Indian take-outs.
  • Yet again limited. However, the Dial pizza place is extremely good (excellent value etc), oh yes, before I forget, after 9pm the pizza shop turns into something from the twilight zone (it can be a wee bit wild). The Indian take away next to leithys' is excellent value.
  • Anyone tried the chinese takeaway, LOVELIES ,does a canny special foo yung as for the other eateries the special kebab at Pizza Dial takes a bit of beating.
  • Pizza Dial is superb. Tandoori Nights is a canny takeaway as well. There is not a decent chinkys for miles
  • The Silver Grid is one of the best take-aways around not only do they give value for money but they give a very high standard of service and quality. The cod is of excellent standard and fried in light and crispy batter to perfection. Lunch-time specials throughout the week are a particular favourite with the regular clientel. Just try and you will find out for yourself!!!!!!!!
  • I think Ali's kebab shop is now called Pizza Dial
  • Ali's Kebab shop is the best in town (situated near the Rafters)
  • Silver grid chippy - Sells the most awful food on the planet

Pubs

  • One word - SHITE - go to Hetton, it's much better!!!!!
  • The Sun Inn, Newbottle village. DO NOT go there if you are under 60 and looking for a pleasant night out or a meal. Bar staff are horrendous and rude, waitresses leave alot to be desired and the prices are way too high. Instead for some atmosphere try the Jolly Potters or The Queens Head...
  • the comment made about the barmaids in the brit are not true as all the staff are new,and the toilets, do,s not happen.
  • jaks and the ivy
  • Ah the burn, It was all different in the old days. Some fat fucker with a hump and a twisty face would swing through the bar area, serving even fatter fuckers from Houghton. A new breed now though apparently, might pop down and see if i can get myself a 18yr old stunner with a lazy eye.
  • youll find callum n ellie 2 of the greatest local heros in houghton in most of the local establishments 2 people definately not t mess about with they practicaly run houghton single handedly so dint mess about you outsiders or they will be comin for you be warned and aware
  • The Burn on Hetton Road is a good pub and serves lovely pub food, but must admit they should have left the pool table in there when it got refurbished, its more like a Wetherspoons now, can only put up with the out of date music and lack of pool for so long on a Friday nite, then its down to the Mill to play pool and dance the rest of the night away. Only problem with that is then you have to walk back up the hill to go home!
  • brittania-guaranteed to get served as long as you are over 12 the in place to get a strip and a fuck for a fiver
  • REGARTING THE DIRTY COW BARMAIDS FROM THE BRIT. THEY WOULDN'T B PINCHING MEN IF THERE WOMEN COULD KEEP TRHEM HAPPY. ITS NORMALLY THE DIRTY MEN CHASING AFTER THE BARMAIDS
  • If you're looking for a cheap fuck go to the brit, the majority of the slappers who drink in there will drop their knickers for half a lager
  • try the zoo-brit full of alcos slappers and down and outs
  • I you like lions you'll love houghton.
  • THE ROBBIES, THE BRIT, THE WHITE LION AND THE GOLDEN LION, CHOICES CHOICES
  • AHhh the reason ive filled out this form! I cant believe nobody has even mentioned the good old lambton castle at herrington. Now called "The Lambton Castle Fun Pub" to try and get rid of its notorious reputation!! Yeah that worked, maybe they should try n stop the fighting and jerry springer style chair throwing!!! But u can always rely on the bouncers to chuck out the troublemakers .... and then watch the brawl in the car park!! Ahh, its nice to keep the peace
  • ho'ton is crap 4 pubs but Hetton can be really good on the right night, try The Crown, The 9, Finnegans, the Brewers, The Bowes, the Shepherds and the Caroline - beats the White really doesn't it!
  • No decent pubs left. Bring back Vi in the Golden.
  • The new done out Burn - 2.50 for a pint of stella - no thanks try the lambton worm in sunderland - cheaper and better
  • NEWS The BURN. is closing to reopen as a Weatherspoons. Yeh.. Great. Cheap Bottles and special offers. also gud fud.
  • What's the matter with the Mill? I don't go there myself, but no one has said anything about it. Is it dodgy?
  • what can i say, is any pub in houghton actually worth mentioning! the Britani has to be the best for a laugh on kareoki night, just hearing that old goat shrieking and purring down the kareoki gets me going...laughing that is, she is always half cut. The place itself is half rotten and you can always smell the locals rotting away when you walk past the place. Also not both of the toilets in the girls do not have locks on so get a friend to hold the door for you. Try the vodka slushies!
  • The Burn, The Mill, all the rest. The Brit and Robbie Burns are the best or Hetton Big Club in Hetton and the 9
  • Pop in to the Mill and have a pint hand pulled by Bobby Ewing
  • the robbies is a dump now, taking over by the scum of houghton. it once was respectable- happy days
  • Great Disco Karaoke at the Robbie Burns Houghton le spring Fri, Sat & Sun Nights
  • The snooker club is a very nice and friendly place but the manager (derek) is simply a tosser and they pull a shite pint of carlsberg so stick to cans and bottles
  • the white is my local, the snooker club is for trendy puffs and stuck up bitches, the brit and robbies are dives. the big club got knocked down which was fathers local. OAP's best go the Glendale and get the 141 home at half ten, old bastards
  • any gueses which pub diane will be working in next its the buffs at the moment(23/5/02)
  • Look out for ernie dixon in any pub in houghton! hes always around there somewhere!
  • golden exellent for a quite drink, white is good now, brit and robbies still crazy. they seem to be doing something to the old lambton, maybe re-opening, but i bet theyre making private - iflats out of it!
  • they all have the essentials "DRINK"
  • dont know about pubs but there is plenty of duty frees on the go say no more
  • The Sun is class, you'll find yerself talking to some old geezers about 70's music...class!
  • It's nice to see that the Lambton is getting a face lift including a new roof. Plenty of pubs such as the Robbie Burns, Brit, White Lion and the Golden Lion in Houghton Centre but with a few miles there are three pubs and a club in Newbottle and numerous pubs in Fence Houses, Hetton-le-Hole and Shiney Row.
  • The SNUG and BAR in the Golden Lion is Mecca for fat sad balding losers who still live with their mothers.
  • golden lion- great little pub apart from the fart smell you get every night
  • the brittania is a nice pub especially on a friday night as it has a good karaoke on and its a good drink
  • The queens head again for kids
  • the britannia inn - barmaids are dirty cows who pinch your men - but u can even use the toilets now
  • houghton comrades, exellent bingo and karaoke nights with brian mcgill
  • Theres definitely a FRESH FACED crowd in the Three Tunns on Hetton Road... and The Burn!
  • Nutty's place is always good for a party
  • The Burns favourite customer Ali Stafford was out on the town last Saturday night. He was spotted on Houghton Rd. in the company of a real cow. He also arranged blind dates for his mates Dean & Deak.
  • The 'Golden': the toasties have never been the same and lock-ins as long since Vi but still the best
  • In the Burn watch out for the snake carrying battenburg he can be seen rubbing up the barmaids of a Friday evening.
  • The Burn Inn is a fine drinking establishment and if you can put up with the new Landlord Alan's tall tails and Mr Ali Stafford's witty farming stiries then you're on to a winner. If you are really adventerous then why not pop in to see the lovely ladies of the darts team on a Tuesday night.
  • The Burn - went down hill after Mel left and some nob called Trevor took over - he has gone now, however if you like fast paced entertainment check out Lee Sunter for in the bar area for his ever cheerfulnes and tremendous wit. Also check out Helen Stothard for the lastest gossip and jackinories.
  • Plushest - The Spring Inn (good food) on Market Place. All the pubs in the town centre are some sort of Lion; white, golden, red....
  • My knowledge of the boozers in the town centre (although I must admit to not being an authority upon the subject) is that they are so bad that no sane person would seriously consider venturing down the street. However, I believe that so canny boozers do exist further out of town.
  • who said the Burn serves a good pint must like the taste of their own piss as the pumps are plumbed into the bogs. BRING BACK MEL
  • Can't beat the Burn for a good drink!
  • Take your pic, - There is the Golden and White Lion, The Brit, The Buffs, The Robbie Burns, All Fine young drinking establishments.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • The peppercorn coffe shop has to be the best in the north east try the breakfast ommlette if u r hungry,
  • Can't think that there is any cafe's in Houghton except the Peppercorn, which is usually full of elderly ladies, not that theres anything wrong with them! But theres definitley a market there for more cafes and coffee shops, if anyone wants to open one that would be great!
  • loads
  • Peppercorn i think its called under the learning centre its so sweet! when the sun shines on the windows early in the morning they all light up in a glitter type of frenzy.
  • Houghton Coffee Shop sells Tea
  • Im proud of the pepercorn cafe it sells teacakes
  • peppercorn cafe/resteraunt quite good. seems out of place in houghton
  • stones cafe for some white widdow, best atmosphere in town
  • the book store in bridges
  • Peppercorn Cafe. Same story as the bike shop.
  • Try Peters for a fab coffee or Cappacino, sandwiches, pasties, cakes etc. The new coffee shop next to the library will be well worth a visit.
  • Peter's Bakery / Coffee Shop. Frequented by pasty muching pineapple heads.
  • peters is a good cafe iv always enjoyed a good cup of tea in there since it opened
  • What ever happened to Riannes Cafe? You could get chips, mushy peas and a dose of the shits for 20p!!
  • Bring back Bogey's. - the trendy little Bistro next to the kebab shop.
  • Peter's Cathedral Bakers in Newbottle Street has a down-to-earth caff. The Pennyfarthing in Mautland Square is much more sophisticated; they do toast!
  • Truely appalling! No choice what so ever. Ask for a cup of Columbian dark roast and you would probably be told: 'we have lost the phone number of our regular Columbian drug dealer / importer, but give us a few minutes and we will sort you out with our own indigenous product'.
  • A new coffeshop has opened within Peters Bakery noce and clean

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.
