Record Shops

  • HaHa - come to me, I'll burn a disk for you for £2.00 (cheapest offer going)
  • OMFG GO TO TOWN IF U WANT A RECORD THAT BADLY U LAZY DOGS FOR ONCE GET OFF UR FAT ARSERS
  • The best record shop in the area for some of the more unusual stuff is Hot Rats in Sunderland, they also have flyers for all the best gigs in the area, so get down there. It's just moved from one side of the road to the other, so if you thought it was gone, turn around, its still there, live and kickin!
  • The best record shop in houghton is the magistrates court They have a better turn out than sunderland on a monday morning
  • woolies is shit for music. its hardly got owt in!!!nowhere in houghton does mint music.spinning disc in the town is canny gud for vinyl. its got sum alrite stuff in
  • I would have gone to sunderland to good ol Our Price .... if only it hadnt been closed down a year or so ago!!! Brilliant service .... gutted when i had to find a new job
  • woolworths
  • Have a good look around the bins in the back streets of the Britania pub...you never know. The old goat on the kareoki might have misplaced her best of West Life C.D.
  • Woolworths is the only place, doesn't have much but its cheap. At Hall Lane you can buy copies that a man done on his CD writer, they are crap
  • SPINNING DISK,SUNDERLAND WAX TRAX,SUNDERLAND REFLEX,NEWCASTLE BY DICK
  • go to the town for any decent records. My advice is hot rats, or for the best selection in europe head to HMV in newcastle/scumland
  • Woolies, or the club down dairy lane at least they have the most records
  • Woolies do CD's. They've got about 20 in stock. If you're a DJ looking for Vinyl then move to a better area.
  • Nowt really
  • There isnt anywhere other than woolies! Try RPM or Reflex in Newcastle for vinyl.
  • Woolworths (Howton's Harrods)
  • Woolworths is the only place that sells records so rock on woolies.

Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • God, if you want to go drinking locally stick to Hetton - better pubs and (usually) better people! Bring back Finnegans!
  • Well, this could get nasty..... The only club i know in houghton, your more likely to get stabbed than hear any decent NIN or Slipknot. I would stay clear. Go to Legends in Newcastle for some sweet rock, if you can handle the very very very young EMO's.
  • Jaks bar n the new nite club called the Ivy...The main place to be here, this place rocks. great music policy top people so check it out.....
  • jaks lounge bar & the ivy niteclub. all situated in sunderland street houghton. grt for the over eighteens. and a great dance venue.
  • powerhouse is the one
  • Has no one heard of jaks bar god this thing needs updating!!Its the number one spot in houghton, Everey one whos anyone will be seen in jaks bar its class!
  • THERE ISN'T ANY BANDS WE JUST GET DISTURBED BY ALL THE CHAVS ON A FRIDAY GETTING MORTAL GOING TO THE LOCAL RAVE CLUB MCEWANS CENTER 'POWER HOUSE'AS THEY CALL IT
  • The only club in Houghton is Moonshine, which was formerly Gas Niteclub. Do not go there if you expect to leave with a) your dignity b) your liver or c) your wallet. If you want a decent mad nite out, stick to Sunderland, Newcastle or Durham. Only do Houghton on a Friday, and stay away from the town centre.
  • buffs club at hoton- brill karaoke on monday night
  • try the buffs club in frederick place for a karaoke monday night with mad mike hunt and lesley ann christy tues aft wed night fri aft sun night with lesley
  • Clive Birchams snooker room is meant to be a laugh. Rumour has it a lass lost her virginity underneath it once. She had a carpet burn on her chin the next day.
  • Having never been to the moonshine club or what ever the hell its called I am only goin to recommend goin to sunderland on a thursday night. Its cheap as chips and if ya go to the lovely (apart from the kinda sticky floors) pzazz then u can gurantee cheaps drinks and a variety of music. Its a laff, u can make an arse of urself and no1 bats an eyelid ..... I mean have you seen sum of the freaks in there!! It is my fave place but only on a thursday ... wudnt be seen dead on a sat (well actually that might be how i looked if i did go there on a sat!) Anyhoooo
  • the best club has to be the glendale and the spring in but we have not gave jaks bar a chance yet, the brittannia is too out of date with elizabeth wheatley, the robbies is just a no go zone, the buffs well thats okay for the bingo, the burn hotel is a no go zone and the mill thats only for high class people r u not welcome u r only welcome if u have kids as they know you are going to spend money.
  • There was that one place called the Gas but it has recently been changed to something else, its one of Naomi G fav places to go to have a good boogie on the dance floor. She is normally there on a Friday and Saturday night without fail, so go there if you wanna see her great dance skills...honestly its amazing that girl is not in the olympics.
  • The Mcewans AKA Hanger 13 whistle posse crew in the house cowies college parties young lasses monged to bits you know the rhyme. Houghton is shite for eveything, there is club moonshine or whatever, never been though
  • THE NEW MONKEY HANGAR 13 BY DICK
  • Do not ever visit Club Moonshine if you dont want a second mouth cut in your neck!
  • the white seems to have got rid of the scum that used to drink in their, so maybe gas has changed, but boy have i seen some bottle-battles outside there at 2:15 am.
  • moonshine is the place to be
  • the only club that is popular in houghton is down dairy lane you can meet all the locals there. They specialise in lockie backs too,the staff wear nice uniforms but dont ask for help as this usually falls on deaf ears.
  • britania in houghton
  • Mcewans isnt a proper club, but it could be class is it was done up. You can expect the likes of Hanger 13 (Rave, MC's and that shite). There's loads of college parties, girls as young as 13 go to get pissed...and molested off the older lads.
  • The 'Gas' Nightclub in houghton town centre.......prime spot to fimt charvers who like cheap cider and fags!
  • The Community Centre in Burdon Road is underused and would be a fantastic place to start up more clubs so that the youth of the area are not hanging around the streets. The Access Point is fantastic and has Computer Clubs etc.
  • if you want a good pint and get no hassle from the local SCUM get yourself up to the comrades
  • The gass woohoo its shite
  • Houghton \Social Club on Hall Lane such a nice nipping clean friendly establishment ran by the fiddler and her bunch of exciting cronies
  • Used to be The Birds Nest, a class venue for mucho pints of scotch before a 3:00am trip to Birtley cafe
  • Gas nightclub excellent for perfecting the art of fat tart pulling
  • Gatecrasher of the North East - Gass! Electric Boogaloo!
  • Gas nightclub. Hear the lastest offering from Shania Twain speeded up to get your feet tapping.
  • Working Mens' Clubs only.
  • Jesus christ on a bloody bike, Gas is like the bar from star wars! Really, you do take your life into your own hands upon entering. The bouncers in the so called club are similar to the indigenous people found within the lower Paleolithic period of some 2,000,000 years ago (They couldn't even suss out the most basic functions, and if you expect any form of basic human dignity or rights associated with modern society, then please stay away). On a more serious note, it is a very scary place for outsiders. That's great for tourism isn't it?
  • In Houghton Prepare to come back out with a black eye, broken legs and broken arms TROUBLE
  • Gass Nightclub - If you wish to pick up the lowest of the low then come here, look at someone the wrong way and you will be farting your teeth out for weeks. Not a plesant place

Live Music Venues

  • Caroline in Hetton has head-banging bands
  • The Sun in Newbottle has a different live band on every Saturday night, it gets really packed so if you want a seat, get there early!
  • The Sun Inn at Newbottle has regular band nights - usually covers, but occasionally original bands. The White Lion also has a band night - usually a saturday. There's talk of regular music happenings at the Kepier Hall (the one behind the church, not to be confused with the school) coming off in 2005, but nobody knows anything concrete yet.
  • CAROLINE IN HETTON HAVE SOME GUD BANDS ON ON A FRIDAY
  • woolworths - elastic bands. Poundshop prob has them too
  • theres only the glendale
  • Houghton Kepier school have a band, the rest of the music is enjoyed by the charvers who stand outside of the white Lion listening to the music in the cold because they are not old enough and not well dressed enough to be served...thats bad considering the dress standards in the White Lion are pretty low. Just like the girls toilets.
  • Again Mcewans centre on a mission, and probably pubs for bands. Not anywhere really exciting but I hear that 'the Joyriders' play in the Travellers Rest in Shiny which is classed as Houghton Le Spring. They are canny good
  • The Robbie Burns new tenants Di & Harry are continuing the pubs tradition of "the best karaoke in the north east" with Disco Karaoke on Friday, Saturday and Sunday Nights.
  • drunk old person singing frank sinnatra on kareoke is about as musical as it gets at the moment.
  • outside any of the grotty hostelries and newtown estate
  • Few and far between
  • used to have some good bands on at the Lambton!
  • McEwans and The White Lion pack a crackin turn!
  • Ist Saturday of every month check out Strictly Headshots Productions at he McEwans Centre.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.
