Food

  • I and my Wife, found the Compass Rose excellent value, for Xmas Lunch. the Staff were friendly, and the service good. The contributor, who found it dire, must have been looking for for things to criticize, rather than praise. The inhabitants like it, so did we. If one wants, brashness, noise, and youth orientation, then go to the larger towns and cities, they seem more preccupied with Youth, and pleasing them.
  • Chippy opposite the Salterton is quite good, always busy!! The takeaway is "rank", without a doubt the worst I have ever tried. (drive the 5 miles into exmouth and go to the Bamboo or China Garden)Gardiners is without a doubt, the best in town as restaraunts go.Corleones the Italian, should be good, Dane the chef is superb, used to be chef at Marios, but not eaten here so "jury is out"
  • Had a fantastic evening meal at the Compass Rose Restaurant.Great atmosphere and not pricey.Didn't book and just scraped in so next time we will. The waitress told me it used to be Marios but it hasn't been for some time.We liked Budleigh and will return soon!
  • Chinese, couple of chippy's, Mario's italian place is good, but pricey. Flirt with mario and he might give you a disount
  • Budleigh is getting surprisingly good at food. There are 2 chippies competing violently with each other (personally I like the one opposite the Salterton Arms best- ooh, scandalous!)a Chinese and Mario's the Italian, which is rather lovely although Mario himself( if that's his real name ! ) can get a bit overpowering when you're trying to eat your meal in peace! YES- everything IS alright, thanks !Food is delicious though.
  • There don't seem to be any very classy restaurants, which is surprising, when you look at the wealth of the majority of inhabitants. There is a chippy that offers concessions to OAPs only.
  • Plenty of variation..... Pubs-standard to good Restaurants- not bad at all! Other/Fast- 2 competing F&Chippies, also a chinese takeaway (!)

Pubs

  • If you're not local born and bred, they are as clicky as hell. Pretend that you own a tractor and you'll be fine.
  • Pubs in Budleigh are pretty dire, The Feathers , The Salterton..umm, oh The Billy (as locals call it ) all the sort of place which falls silent when you enter- ie you're not from round these parts..,etc.. But I am, I am, I just haven't been here for a while ! And I wonder why?!
  • Hopeless pubs. I was unfortunate enough to spend New Years Eve there and I still get down when I think about it.
  • ....as above for food. Feathers- bog standard local King William-kiddies(16+) in the evenings Budleigh Arms - the 'creme de la creme' of the 3....and deservedly so!!

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • Cafe Budleigh, shines like a beacon above all others. The couple who run it are lovely, nice English Grub, good prices. Also Cosy Teapot quite good.
  • cafe budleigh has to be the best one in budleigh although it is for the older generation mainly its the cheapest one weve got and the nicest people in there by far. we do need a young trendy cool bar/hangout and there is a restuarant up for rent so anyone with the initiative plz give it a go
  • The cosy teapot - NICE
  • Now cafes and coffee shops are abundant in loverlee Buderlee. Their is The Longboat cafe on the seafront for scrummy cream teas and the like- only open in the Summer months though. And then in town there is Butlers next to the bakery- nice jacket potatoes I'm told, and then that little quaint one in the middle, I can't remember the name but it's all gingham table cloths and doilys(?) in there and the staff all wear nice homely aprons!Ahhhh.....

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
