Favourite Building
The Admiralty Breakwater. A quarter of a mile long and still there ater 150+ years. Also Quesnard lighthouse, although its foghorn is a bit wimpish since Botham used to live next door!
Fort Tourgis
Huge fort bulit by the Bristish Army in the 1800's. There are 13 forts around
the island and they are all worth exploring, along with all the German bunkers.
And....'The Cathedral of the Channel Islands' the most impressive church in
the Channel Islands.
Demolish It Now Building
Most of the ugly new houses on Les Rochers, the yellow brick horror on Le Petit Val, and the still unfinished monstrosity that is Quatre Vents.
THAT nuclear power station nearby.
Quatre Vents, an unfinished monstrosity on the beautiful south coast cliffs
The Customs building at the airport......
The Best Things
Excellent, uncrowded beaches. Friendly and generally tolerant atmosphere. Low crime rate. Alderney Week (carnival, 1st week of August)
The many Nazi built bunkers, and forts are a must for WWII enthusiasts. They're everywhere... but probably hide a very grim secret or two.
Knowing almost everyone you meet in the pub.
The Best thing this year will be the summer.....its one long party.......Alderney
Week from the 31st July and then 'the Eclipse' on the 11th of August and then party, party.party
till you drop......its going to the 'best summer of your life'
The Worst Things
Cost of travel to/from Alderney. Cost of living. Unavailability of lots of things except by ordering in advance.
The south of the island looks across to a big nuclear power plant in Normandy, and there have been a few too many brain tumours on the island for my liking.
Rubbish is tipped over the side over a cliff, and often gets washed up. The locals claim the tip never fills up. :(
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.
If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
Have Your Say...
The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.
You can tell us more about Alderney.
This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here.
(But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)
You can use the add an event form
to tell us about events happening in Alderney.
Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
