  • Jess Tate is a legend, has now been expelled from St. Mary's for tipping pond water over Mrs. Adlers head (deputy head)WHat a laugh!
  • Jade Jagger( who got expelled), Eva Rice- Tim Rice's daughter, will young's cousin, oh and i saw prince harry in st mary's once!!
  • Tori Amos made a pop video in Curzon Park a few years ago. The song never made it into the UK top 40 so we never got to see it though. My bro saw it on a huge video wall in a record shop in Washington DC though. said it was really weird seeing Calne glorified like that!! Anyway while they were filming the vid, some jippos nicked a load of the film props. Typical Calne!!!

  • bob burns- a living legend of the early sports centre days.
  • St. Mary's is known for the most amount of celebs, or celebs daughters in this school... amazing but true.... the St. Mary's girls also have a very high standard of Etonians in their beds on the free weekends and also after the socials.

  • Samuel Taylor Coleridge visited Calne on holiday and, in all probability, wrote parts of 'The Rhyme Of The Ancient Mariner' whilst languishing in an opium induced stupour, in a town as far from the sea as you can get. Far out!
  • Was oxygen discovered here by Priestly or did he copy the idea?
  • Calne's most famous claim to fame was that Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen by looking at bubbles in the river here, while he was staying in the house up at Bowood in the 18th Century. St. Edmund who celebrated his 950 anniversary in 1976 was Vicar of Calne when he was appointed as Archbishop of Canterbury. Walter Goodall George held the World Mile Record for running the mile in just over 4 minutes for about 17 years at the end of the last century/the beginning of this one.
  • Priestley - bloke who 'invented' oxygen (allegedly - usual story about racing other contemporary researchers to be first to publish).
  • Julian Cope (Teardrop Explodes etc), Rustic Rod Goodway (sixties pop musician)
  • Err... the bloke who invented pork curing?? (Mr. Harris?)

  • Loads of weirdos walking around dribbling. Thats entertainment!
  • only the guys who gather rounf the brass pigs on Saturday mornings shouting about God and things.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Calne. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Calne.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
