Musical Instrument Shops and DJ Gear

  • Balaams and Soundsplus, balaams for fancy musicians and Soundsplus for guitars, drums and basses, lack of high end models though for experienced players
  • sounds plus is the best bet because balaams music is better for posh stuff like pianos ad violins, down st johns street there is a little second hand shop that sells good dj'in gear.
  • Tesco is good enough for me
  • Balaams music, (traditional music shop) and sounds plus, (mainly drums and guitars), both down the road towards Roys and The college, ( the name of which escapes me)
  • Under new ownership, Sounds Plus, check out the website at www.soundsplus.co.uk
  • sounds plus rocks balaams is more for the band geeks out there
  • Ballaams music down near Roys theirs also one on te other side whith an illumanous pink bass guitar in the window.
  • Balaam's musical intrument shop. Walking in and feeling special cos I could play an intrument. Perusing the books that show you how to play Beatles tunes on the piano and nodding wisely.
  • Balaams and Sounds Plus, i dont play an instrument but when i have been in theses two places they seem to know what theyre on about and theyre really nice too!
  • ballams music and sounds plus are pretty good. Ballams is more classical type stuff, sounds plus appeals more to the younger age group, band sort of people. bey helpful and friendly.
  • Sounds plus is the best, it has electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric basses (sometimes hv acoustic aswell), and drums!
  • Sounds plus is well good for guitars, basses and drums !!! I play bass meself
  • Ballams and Sounds plus
  • Balams is alright but nobody has any idea what they are doing so you can never get any info about what you whant to buy
  • I reckon the people who own this kind of shop go on a course to be patronising. Good-ish for guitars, crap for drums.
  • Balaams!
  • Go to Sounds Plus.
  • The manager of 'sounds plus' will be happy to give you a discount if you show him the right stuff but unfortunatly this only applies to the girlies. The shop itself is situated opposite ballams if you were on a musical instrument binge, of sorts.
  • Balaam's. Not only do they stock many electrical items, they also have a freakishly ugly owner: John Balaam.

Recording Studios, Rehearsal Rooms, PA Hire

  • the rehearsal rooms
  • Old School Studios has just opened in Bury St Edmunds. Great sounding rooms, nice people, lovely vintage equipment, cool modern equipment, fully working ears, 20 years experience recording bands and doing live sound. Just round the corner from Angel Hill. Check the website for details, news, equipment lists, pics, mp3s etc: www.oldschoolstudios.co.uk
  • There is a recording studio in the college... albeit a poor one
  • NEW SoundProof Rehaearsal Rooms in Bury St. Edmunds! There are 2 (one large / one small) Soundproofed rehearsal spaces on St. Andrew Street South (come out of Waitrose Exit and turn Right - they are 150 yards on the Left). Its called The Rehearsal Rooms (funnily enough) and is bookable from rates of 5 pound an hour! Equipped with full PA, Drumkits and Amps etc, with a lounge to chill out in during sessions. OPEN January 2005! 07947475124 to book.
  • I think West Suffolk College has a recording studio but dont know about the others.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Bury St Edmunds. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Bury St Edmunds.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
