MUSE
Norman Wisdom once made a film here in 1966. Oh yeah and Muse come from Teignmouth.
My name is Wseley I am the fisherman painted on the newagents wall, I also appeared in the Norwich Union, red braces advert and countless TV interviews about the state of the shellfish beds in the river Teign. I am the "smiley old fisherman with the long white beard" tilted (Wesley the fisherman) thats me.
The bloke from the Alliance & Leciester commercial (fisherman with a long white beard) + members of the pop group MUSE used to live here.
Two members of the crew of HMS Amethyst, of the yangtse incident fame are residents of Teignmouth, contact Viv Wilson at Teignmouth News for info, she should have their names , if not she can soon find them .
Lets correct this bit about the guy who sailed into the history books having made the biggst scam th etown ever knew.
Donald Crowhurst, a somerset resident from WSM, set sail from Teignmouth in the catamaran " Teignmouth Electron" on th esingle handed round th eworld yacht race, and sailed out into the Atlantic, he went ashore briefly in South America, but spent th ewhole time he was supposed to be travelling around the world sailing aimlessly around in the Atlantic far away from normal shipping lanes sending fictitious radio reports as to his locations and his eta for arrival back in Teignmouth, allegedly sucessfully completing the trip . Days before he was due to arrive back in Teignmouth , the Teignmouth Electron was found sailing unmanned in the Atlantic Ocean. Diary logs and film found on board revealed the sad and sorry truth. The mystery that surrounded this trip has been th esubject of several TV documentaries and consideration is being given to making a film on it with Robbie Coltraine portraying the late Rodney Halworth, th enewspaper man behind the venture who, like the council and the then Mayor ( my father), and the townspeople themselves, were duped into believing in Crowhurst and his dream..
Hot new band Muse all moved here as pre-teenagers and spent their teenage years in this "living hell"... Met up at Teignmouth Community College and formed a variety of school bands with names such as "Carnage Mayhem" and "Gothic Plague" before settling down to become Muse at the age of 15. Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme and Dominic Howard will be huge stars soon, mark my words. And Chris even still lives in the place!
Our famous resident is a smiley old fisherman that looks a bit like Father Christmas. He has his picture painted on the side of the newsagents in Northumberland place and was on a advert on T.V. (Only trouble is I can't remember his name)
Charles Babbage (invented a big mechanical calculator)
Thomas Luny (marine artist)
Famous ex-residents include Keats, the poet, and a bloke who sailed around the world, but actually lied about it and got as far as the falklands and came back.
Buskers, Street Entertainers
Never met, but seen a guy called "Antigua Joe" around new quay that seems cool!
Few wannabe wideboys about, plenty of wierdos, and nevs everywhere
there was a man who used to be up near woolworths playing an accordian, but im not sure now. there was also a man who used to sit outside the co-op playing a flute who we bought a bottle of nasty cider to make him go away!
its quite funny when someone falls over, does that count as a street entertainer?
MORRIS DANCERS
A very strange man who appears in the triangle every week, he wears a suit and sings along to opera on his ghetto blaster... the oldies all sit round and seem to love it!!! Quite a crowd puller, but I don't think the poor bloke is all there, most of the crowd is stood laughing at him!!!!
ERRMMM LIKE, ERR ... SOME OLD GUY, PLAYING A ACORDIAN, SOMETIMES, IF HE ISNT ALLREADY DEAD, I THINK...
Well there's always the folk festival!
Brunswick Street has been made a busk free, pedlar free zone
Nowt much to say about this, except that there's a lovely man with an accordian that keeps turning up with his dog every now and then.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
