• theres quite a few musicical instrument shops in colchester. i play the keyboard and my boyf plays the guitar so we visit these shops pretty often. there's allegro music which specialises in keyboards and guitars, manns music which is mainly keyboards and guitars, music warehouse does everything, and theres a really kick ass guitar shop down priory street but i cant remember what its called! there a few dj shops but dont know what theyre called but a few of my mates think theyre really good.

• Trevor Durrant, in the Cowdray Centre across main road from Sports Centre. Wide selection of quality guitars, basses, amplification etc. Always friendly and enthusiastic.

• Stage One Music, Malcolm and Neil are alright. Music Warehouse has shitloads of of guitars. Just avoid the B.C. Rich ones.

• Manns Music sits halfway down Colchester High Street and stocks a large range of musical instruments. They're even online now. A bit bright in there, and they do tend to 'pounce' on you, but prices are reasonable.

• Has to be Axe music and the other place nearby (can't remember the name) that looks like the owner got stoned in 1974 and never came down.
• Manns Music Shop, High Street, used to be really snooty - but more more user-friendly these days. Stock many things a musician would need and are prepared to order in those that are not in stock.

Recording Studios, Rehearsal Rooms, PA Hire

• Got to be Legend Studio (behind Roller World)
• Unit one studios - very good, quite cheap, just around the corner from rollerworld.
• The Academy recording studios, Oyster Park, Colchester - Gives a free 2 hr consultation to anyone wishing to use the facilities. One of the best studios in East Anglia. Commercial sounds for demo prices.
• Sir Charles Lucas Arts College have a new recording suite available to hire. visit http://www.sclucas.essex.sch.uk/home.aspx?q=207
• Unit 1, goto rollerworld, then by the carpark, round the back, is a railway bridge, go under this, and you should see some units. Follow the road round the corner and you should hear muffled music emitting from a unit with "Unit 1" written on it. It has 4 practice rooms, and they can record demo tapes for you. All soundproofed, they supply drumkit(-cymbals), mics, leads, amps if needed, and I think its £30 for an hour or 3 (unsure) but its a good place to practice, and they can get your band going with the demo tapes all recorded well(each instrument and part separately). It's a good place.
