Anyone know anything about JOAN SUGRUE married to BUTTY SUGRUE? by Danielle Kyriacou (Member 10025780) on 10-Feb-2001
I'm interested to find out more about this interesting couple who ran pubs and clubs in the London area. They have an association with The National club in Kilburn, The Puckfair club in Maida Vale, and The Elephants Head pub in Camden Town. These names seem to pop up when people reminisce about Kilburn and Camden Town in particular. Just curious.

i think i recall butty sugrue who had a pub in shepherdfs bush in the early seventies. i think i heard he had passed on but i may be wrong. the pub was on shepherds bush green on the right hand side facing towards hammersmith...

Came across this by accident in my efforts to track down some information on my Mother, Eileen O' Callaghan, sister of Joan, who was married to Butty Sugrue. Unfortunately Joan died last week and to the best of my knowledge Butty died some years ago.It would seem that your query was a casual one, but if you have any further information that might pertain to me, I would be grateful.

Hi
does anyone know if the pub used in the film 'Withnail and I' is actually in Camden- in the film it was called 'The Mother Black Cap', but the filmmakers may have used a set for the interior shooting- does anyone know if this pub actually exists?

Yes it exists...at least it did last time I was in Camden (Dec!!!)... out of tube left "up" the High St (towards Mornington Cresecent) and it's on the right hand side of the road!

  • Re: Withnail & I by monki (Member 10142162) on 6-Jan-2005
the name of the pub is taken from the black cap (still there) and the mother red cap (now the world's end). the actual pub used in the film is (i think) in westbourne park and is now the babushka vokda bar.

My nan had my dad there also, he was born 21/3/48. She then had another son also born there on 6/5/51 called Andre Norris, he was adopted at birth and has not been located, my nans name was Annie Norris, she was living in England but from Ireland. Would love to find out more about Andre or people born in the years 1948,1951 & 1953. Thank you
