MISSING CAT, South Dell, Ness, Isle of Lewis
|
by Penny (Member 10186040) on 14-Jul-2006
|
Lally is an all white male cat, with blue eyes. He is deaf and cannot be called if he can't see you. He has thick, but not long, white fur and a stumpy tail.
He is missing in the South Dell area of Ness, but may be in neighbouring villages.
Please call 07859876406 if you see him. A reward is offered for his return.

Holy Toledo, Bowang, have you ever heard of spelling and punctuation?
Most pubs are shut on Sunday, but a few open their doors for the hardened drinkers.
Arnish is shut (again) after a balls-up (again) involving a company foolishly supported by our local enterprise company and council (again).
Still, never mind, when the AMEC roadshow (moorshow?) arrives, all will be fine and dandy (again)... ... more >>

Thomas Crawshaw or John Crawshaw
|
by Patricia Latenstein van Voorst (Member 10126569) on 13-Jun-2006
|
My maiden name is Patricia Ann Crawshaw, I lived as a young child at the top of Bonfire Hill Road, Crawshawbooth. My mother's maiden name is Ellen Roscow, formerly of Pinner Cottage, Pinner Lane, Crawshawbooth. My father's name is Thomas Crawshaw, formlerly a self employed Window Cleaner of Gainsborough Ave Burnley, and Isle Of Harris. Age approx 73 years, address now unknown, after he left the Isle of Harris, August 2003 and has made no contact ever since.
It is possible that he is living in the Bacup Area of the UK. I am very interested to hear from anyone who knows of me or either of my parents.
My father took me from Crawshawbooth at age 6 or 7 years (also my brother John at age approx 9 months in 1962.)
Also of interest is John Crawshaw (my brother) formerly a self employed Window Cleaner of Rosetti Avenue Burnley, then Ex RAF Camp,Aird Uig, Timsgarry, Isle Of Lewis now believed to be residing in the Swansea Post Code area of Wales (SA?)age mid 40's, of fair hair, blue eyes and balding. Occupation now possibly lumberjack. Any information greatly appreciated.
As a child I then lived in other areas such as Stone Cote Farm near Cliviger, Burnley, - Red Lumb, Norden near Rochdale, then 244/246 Todmorden Road, Sharneyford, Bacup (I ran away with the girl next door from here, very unhappy time), Oxford Road and 11\22 Clarence Street, Burnley.
My father Thomas Crawshaw divorced Ellen in July 1974 then re-married later in 1974, Patricia Ann Scott formerly of 36(?) Leyland Road Burnley. (I regularly cleaned this house as a young child.)
My father then had two other children named Lisa and Stuart.
Look forward to hearing from interested parties and many thanks to all responses and interested parties already received.
Patricia. E-Mail: directjewel@aol.com

Hi
Going to buy a flat in Stornoway for renting. Want to know what flats rent for there and where do folk advertise their property. Would anyone be interested in renting a 1 bedroom new build?
The net is rubbish for any information.
Cheers

i'm moving to Stornoway in march and i'm desperately looking for a cheap (preferably under £500 a month) 1 bedroomed flat or house - as long as it's in or within walking distance of Stornoway, i'm not really bothered about anything apart from having a roof over my head and being able to afford it, is there still a flat going?

Rape Crisis Centre threatened legal action
|
by Penny Campbell (Member 10077131) on 28-Jul-2004
|
My previous message warning people, especially men, of the forthcoming rape crisis centre in Stornoway, has unfortunately had to be removed by the managers. Rape Crisis Scotland threatened State51 with legal action should they fail to comply. I think that goes a long way to supporting what I said about them. If I was lying, they wouldn't feel so threatened would they? My deepest sympathy to al l those who will be falsely accused as a result of their actions. ... more >>

While I sympathise with those unjusty accused of a crime. I do feel that there has been a bias towards men in the past.
When a man can claim consent for acts such as urinating on his victim and this can be upheld in court... (as on tv doc)as a possibility and the man can walk free... things certainly need to be looked at again.
There is of course a danger in things swinging to far the other way.
If cases are taken to court without any evidence to corroborate a witness statement when there is evidence to corroborate a defendant saying that they were even in that place at the time.... I do think hefty compensation should be available from the Police for pursuing such cases.
With rape we always have to try to balance the two sides by imagining a friend unjusty accused or a friend raped. Though unjusty accused is very bad to be raped and then have your case dismissed or the guy aquitted must be horrific.. something you are unlikely recover a sense of justice after. ... more >>

I am in no way belittling the devastating effects of rape, but the situation has become damaging to those falsely accused and those who are genuine victims. Those who for malicious reasons cry rape are causing great damage to the claims made by genuine victims. So in my mind there are no winners.
The pendulum has swung too far the other way.
- Re: Rape Crisis Centre threatened legal action
by whitesettlersclub (Member 10027001) on 3-Aug-2004
I do think there is a big divide between the Police response to a child being raped and an adult being raped.
Children it seems are believed years after the event and cases are taken to court. Full grown women are often not believed even after presenting forensic evidence.
I do think that if as a society we do not respond apropriately to an adult being raped; then we may as well stop pretending we care if a child gets abused to.......hadnt they might as well get used to it....?
No........ I know children are vulnerable and need protecting.
But shouldnt we also consider that children can also be malicious and maybe not fully think through the implications of an accusation. Children may also be more easily lead by adults, whether deliberately or simply through increased attrention and interview techniques.
Of course there are genuine cases of child abuse and we wouldnt want to make them harder to prosecute.
It seems to me that better training and investigation of initial facts is required before a child is dragged into the system. A cooling off period (of about a week) after the complaint may not be a bad idea (as long as the child is in a protective environment, and the investigation into the alleged abuser continues without their input.
Certainly the basic facts should be investigated prior to extensive interviweing of a minor; so discrepancies can be fully considered and they have time to back track. They may for instance feel they cannot backtrack if an intial interview leads quickly onto many other interviews.
I dont know Im not a psychologist but I do think there is an air of panic about the current system.. and that it needs looking at.
I certainbly dont think we should be saying that all who say they have been abused are lying though, or fail to support victims. ... more >>

Don't really want to get involved in this, because it is such an "emotionally charged" subject. But, has it ever occurred to anyone that among the ten commandments, the first three are focussed entirely on the worship of G-d, and the remaining seven do not concern themselves in any way with rape?????

Western Isles 'Satanic Abuse' Case, yet another Orkney
|
by Penny Campbell (Member 10077131) on 4-Jul-2004
|
Below is a press release that was sent out yesterday. There is information to show that flawed interview techniques were used to deliberately create the statements supposedly made by the alleged victims. This is exactly what happened in the Orkney case. There is also the belief that one or more people from either Northern Constabulary, NCH or Comhairle nan Eilean Siar attended a Ritual Abuse Con ference which are held annually in Scotland to promote the idea of Satanic Ritual Abuse. Despite the fact that none of these cases have ever turned up evidence of it's existence.
Also, if the council acted so professionally, why was Keith Harper, team leader of the children and families social workers, removed from his job during the case? Why was the girls social worker Margaret Rigg, moved to another department last July, the same time that we have been told the girls expressed a wish to retract the statements?
The children's reporter has stated that a children's hearing is not necessary in reference to our 5 children that were taken that day but returned to me after 2 days of questioning. This clearly shows that we are innocent, that there is no evidence against us, so why were our children removed at all?
PRESS RELEASE
Western Isles 'Satanic Abuse' Case
No explanation and no apology. That is what every innocent person falsely accused of a crime has to face. It is no different in our case.
Our children were forcibly removed from their home last October, against their will and without any explanation given to them. They are not the alleged complainers in this case. Following two days of questioning by police and social services, which caused them much fear and distress, reducing our eldest son who is now 12 to tears as a result of their refusal to offer any answers to his questions, they were returned to myself and to the family home.
My husband and I were both arrested and taken in for questioning. Not only were we questioned on the alleged abuse of the children supposedly making the complaints, but we were accused of manufacturing snuff videos, wife-swapping and dressing in white gowns and masks in order to perform devil-worshipping rituals and animal sacrifices.
These allegations can be confirmed by Dr William Thomson, who exposed the Orkney case and Professor Jean La Fontaine, author of the report commissioned by the Department of Health and published in 1994, into the nature and extent of ritual abuse, and which concluded that such claims could not be believed without evidence.
As a result of the charges against my husband, social services threatened us with the removal of our children into care should my husband return to the family home. This was done despite the lack of any evidence and despite the fact that none of our children made any complaint against either their father or I.
For nearly 5 months, despite repeated requests from our children, they were refused telephone contact with their father and were only permitted to see him during supervised visits. Our eldest had his birthday in November last year, his father wished to take him out to dinner, we were told this was not possible, the risk was too great. Our eldest also requested contact with his father without other people being present, this again was denied.
Property belonging to our children, as well as ourselves, is still being held by Northern Constabulary, this included our children’s instant cameras, of no use to the police but taken never-the-less.
My husband’s solicitor contacted Western Isles Council at the beginning of May to inform them that he wished to take the situation to court for a decision on his return home to be based on the evidence. Western Isles Council rethought the situation and Ian returned home on the 7th May 2004.
Since the beginning of the case, we have suffered vandalism and abusive telephone calls by people on the island, all of which occurred whilst the children were in the house. Ian in particular suffered verbal abuse and was close to suicide by December, at which time his doctor prescribed anti-depressants.
During the last 9 months, I have kept a number of people informed of the situation, including our MP Calum MacDonald, Earl Howe and Claire-Curtis Thomas MP of the All Party Group for Abuse Investigations in the Houses of Parliament, and other individuals including Tania Hunter who worked on the Shieldfield Nursery Nurses case.
Despite writing a number of letters to the First Minister, the Chief Constable, the local Procurator Fiscal and Margaret Hodge, the current Children’s Minister, to complain about the situation, they all indicated that the actions of the agencies involved had been perfectly acceptable.
Although the charges being dropped, we have been falsely accused of a crime that will always be held on our police records. We will now be seeking legal action against the agencies involved in this case, Northern Constabulary, Western Isles Council and NCH.

As a local i'm offended by your negitive comments about the island and its people. I question why you are still here when you cannot see the good in the local people. When you are in Rome you should do as the Romans do and respect their customs, religion, culture and way of life. If you weren't such an arrogant wee spideag and didn't slag people off behind their backs on this website you might find the locals more friendly towards you.

Ha, another local too afraid to be identified, and you said I slag people off behind their backs, sorry but I'm honest about who I am. Before criticising someone for speaking behind backs, be honest about who you are. I don't need two-faced inbreds to be my friends. I speak up about what is wrong with people here, if you're too afraid to stand up for what is right, that's your problem, not mine. What I have stated is what happened, I don't need to exaggerate how vile and offensive locals can be, it shows you all up for what you are. I live here because I like the island not because of who populates it. You're probably one of those against the wind-farm, even though you probably approve of old vehicles dumped on the moor. As for the when in Rome crap, it is wrong to force your religious and cultural views onto other people, I will live the way I want to live, and as long as it doesn't bother other people, then it's none of their business, I don't tell them what to do (though most obviously need some help) and what about locals respecting other people, I never see that happen. Go back to your sheep and whiskey, hopefully one day the island will just be full of 70+ year old Gaelic speakers and sheep, no laughter, fun or enjoyment of any kind, then you will be happy. Go away and come back with something more intelligent, and identify yourself instead of being such a coward. ... more >>

If i had identified myself Penny then i'm sure you would be searching for information on me on every 'knowhere' site in the UK, just as you are for certain others!!
If you were to move to France or any other country would you not embrace its culture and language instead of slagging it of and carrying on as if you were in the UK? The stereotypes that you have used show that you have not mixed at all with your community or else you would know that there is more to the island than whisky and sheep.
Your arrogance and ignorance is frankly astonishing. You are as entitled to your views as the next person but ordinary incomers would have the decency and respect to keep them to themselves instead of slagging off their neighbours on the internet! ... more >>

by Penny Campbell (Member 10077131) on 21-Jul-2004
I came here to live a life without interference from anyone and without interferring with anyone elses life, apparently that is something that local people cannot accept.
I have learnt that there is more to the local community than whiskey and sheep, I have learnt that backstabbing is a popular past-time and that certain people who try and make a future here for themselves are treated to having sugar put in their petrol tank for their efforts, courtesy of jealous, lazy locals who hate people who put in time and effort to achieve things they can't be bothered doing themselves. People who lie and support each other when they attack other people are not the sort of people I want to get to know very well at all thank you.
I have my reasons for looking for information about the people I mention. Why you would think I would be at all interested in you, I cannot imagine.
If you find my arrogance surprising, that's because you have never learnt to stand up for what is right and make criticism when it is needed.
I don't consider it arrogance actually, I consider it to be having the strength of character to say what I feel, a pity that is something that is never taught here.
It's hardly surprising that the population is falling. ... more >>

When the whole thing started my first reaction was well this is going to turn into a fiasco.
Firstly I expected the case to be dropped due to lack of evidence, not because I know anyone involved just because thats what my gut told me. I havent got a great deal of confidence in the Police either; there have been too many bodges in the past.
Secondly I thought it would further divide the natives and the incomers. I did here several times from people I get on with that 'They arent local, locals wouldnt do that'.
Which is frankly ridiculous there are bad people in every culture.
Its always nice to think the bad people are not like, from backgrounds like ours, I suppose.
That said the bad feeling has not seemed to last and I have heard very little comment about what is thought of the case being dropped.
There is always doubt in the minds of others after a case is dropped through lack of evidence etc..so there is a stain on the character of those accused which they have to learn to live with.
While some may think that the cae should not have been dropped it has been, therefore there should be at least cnfusion of weather or not the sympathise with the accused.
To rant that they did not settle into the community infering that this means they have no right to be upset if an unjustice has been done to them is in effect saying... if we dont like you who cares what happens to you.... this is not the way a mature sense of morality reasons. ... more >>

by Penny Campbell (Member 10077131) on 3-Aug-2004
The biggest losers in this case has been our 5 children, who have been all but forgotten in all of this. They have been indirect victims of the malicious attacks on my husband and I. They have lost friends through this which has reduced my 10 year old daughter to tears during the holidays. Those with their self righteous opinions care nothing for how my children now feel. They have lost more than anyone, they have been the innocent victims in this, and show me one person who cares except for us?
They both have written of the fear they felt, my 12 year old shaking and feeling scared when faced with a police interview, thinking that when he was awoken that morning to find police and SS in the house that his father had been in a car accident. That isn't child protection, that is child abuse.
They have all been taken off the 'at risk' register, the only people they were and still are at risk from is everyone outwith our household.
And yes, I know of genuine cases of child-abuse that have been hushed up because it involved locals, and the fact that a convicted child-molester was re-elected as church elder in Stornoway with no-one batting an eyelid just a couple of weeks before this case started (it was reported in the Hebridean at the time). So don't tell me that you all fear for your children's safety when you clearly condone abuse carried out by your own kind. ... more >>

Penny
For somebody who came here intending not to interfere with other people's lives you don't seem to have done a very good job of it. You've done nothing but critisize people since you came here. You might find that your neighbours 'interference' is probably them trying to be friendly.
It is quite rich to here the 'Queen of Backstabbing'herself say that backstabbing is a popular passtime amongst locals. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!! You have done nothing but slag your neighbours off behind their backs since you appeared here.
You call the locals jealous and lazy. Why would they be jealous of a bitter, interfering oinseach who has isolated herself from her community?
You call us lazy! Well are you not someone who has received nothing but charity since you came here. Have you not cost the Comhairle and the Social Security a small fortune with grants to do up your house, taxis, phonebills etc. Do you or your husband even work these days?
Could you please tell us all exactly what marvellous things you have achieved that others couldn't be bothered to do?? You made comments around two years ago slagging people off on this site way before any child abuse allegations were made. Could you tell us what lies they were telling back then, with which you justified not wanting to get to know them.
If you are not interested in me a' ghraidh then why do you ask me to identify myself. I find you not only arrogant but also rude. You should grow up and maybe channel your hatred into something positive. I think you will find that i am actually making criticism where it is most definitely required.
No wonder the population is falling when you are lurking in the shadows! ... more >>

Does such a thing as a launderette exist anywhere in the vicinity of Stornoway? My husband is washing machine-less at the moment and needs to wash shirts and smalls!

it's sheenagh and jenni here (who ever said that ruadhachs and lochies dont mix), we're pretty confident that no one will remember us cos we've been living away for a while now. This seemed like a good idea when we were on our third bottle of red wine so here it is,it may not translate well from email but who cares

Sheenagh and Jenni - I liked your list so much I thought it worth reformatting to make it more readable, so here it is!
P.S. Are you ladies married? My eyebrow hairs are lovely and short ;-)
------------------------------------------------
You know you're an Islander if...
You have a dog called Dileas
You have never worn a biannag
You have at least 3 eyebrow hairs over 1.5 inches long (extra points for on each eyebrow)
You have a pair of 'posh' cords for evenings out
You admire your father so much you have grown an inch long tuft of hair in each ear (extra points if you're female.)
When in Glasgow/ Inverness/ Aberdeen you get on the bus and say "I'm going to Woolies, how much is it to Woolies?" When the driver looks at you quizzically, you clarify, "WoolWORTHS."
When on the mainland you make a concerted effort to go into shops that don't exist in Stornoway. Like LIDL and Poundstretcher.
Oh, and ASSSSDA
You do a monthly Big Shop in Ullapool
Your father knows someone called Tormod who works on The Isle Of Lewis ferry
The first time you tried to get a bus in Glasgow/Inverness/Aberdeen it took 10 buses flying past you to make you realise you had to hold your hand out to make it stop
You have never worn your father's boiler suit for the peats when you were 8 years old
You have never got lost in the peats - 10 feet away from where your dad and mum were working
When you move to Glasgow/Inverness/Aberdeen, you become a central point for free accommodation in said place
You have made a sandcastle on the beach that when you stamp on it find has at least 1 ball of sheep's business in it
You have almost killed your father doing a 3 point turn at 30 mile an hour while 'learning to drive' on the machair
You have at least 4 deteriorating cars in your garden but won't give anyone any parts (extra points if not a Niseach)
You were a softy if you ever used an umbrella
You were a softy if you had glasses
Anything over minus 10 Celsius is sleeves-rolled-up weather
You walked into what you thought was your own empty house to find that a friend of your gran's has let himself in and is making himself a pot of tea on the gas
You slip into the Gaidhlig inadvertently in the middle of sentences (extra points if you have done this to English-only speaking friends.)
You insist that your lowland friends that they call you by your Gaelic name and that it's not that hard to pronounce Domhnall Aonghas Roddy Iain
You have never been a farmer, but have a barn out the back just for good measure
You thought Pizza Hut was a place you could buy fuel for the fire (think about it...)
You know someone in America (extra points if they are relations)
You have a relative who has a disused loom in the barn who is waiting for the tweed business to pick up
You have never gone to the well to get water for tea when the plumbing was wrong
You consider black and white portable televisions with dial tuning to be 'good enough' for the kitchen
You have at least one school photo where you have a bald patch on your head after your dad decided to save money by using one of those red combs with razor blades in them
You nearly burnt the house down trying to install dimmer lights in the lounge at home
Your gran has at least 10 family photos on display on the sideboard.
You have realised that you and all your cousins look exactly the same, but still think your immediate family is best as you have a brother at Glasgow University
You have a third cousin in the RAF.83.
You still have all your own teeth. You store them in 'a bag from the dentist's.' The oldest tooth is 30 years old
Your uncle's party trick is pushing his upper denture plate out and showing the remains of what he had for breakfast that morning
You saw your first tree on the mainland
You have a passport but have never actually been past the Barvas moor
You enjoy spinning aimlessly around town at 10 o'clock at night and beeping at people you think you know
You try to apply the rules of football to all sports
When you were 12 you thought Pointers was Kool90
When you were 8 you got a row from your friend's dad for breaking up his new roofing timber so you could use it to build a ganghut out of the old blackhouse out the back
As a teenager for some reason you wanted a bowling alley, ice rink and cinema in Stornoway. You then realised that working in WISCOs was much cooler and you were so tired by the end of the day that you had no energy to do anything anyway. There you are, now
When laying a new living room carpet, you cut up the old one and use it for the wee bit in the porch
You lift your index finger to say hello even when out of your car
You have had 5 different nicknames before one finally stuck at age 10.
The nickname you have is the only one of the 5 that you really dislike, but are too hard to admit it
You attach the ending '-boy' to the end of men's names when addressing them
From age 11 your haircut's direction permanently matched that of the prevailing wind on your side of the island. Wonderfully, this did not affect your 'dossan'
You play for at least 10 village football teams, as having a fourth cousin in Bragar entitles you to do so.
Has Berti Vogts ever visited the Island?
You know 20 people called Seonaid. They all wear exactly the same style of clothes
Your ancient Ford Fiesta has go faster stripes, a red spoiler and a white passenger door
You know that, despite what they say, wherever you lay your hat it's not home unless it's up north.

Places to go

Grew up in Stornoway when I was a wee kid and remember it being a beautiful place, but a bit weird on Sundays. How I cried when I found the park swings padlocked. Am returning with my girlfriend after nearly 20 years to spend a week rediscovering it's beauty. Any suggestioms about great places of interest would be greatly appreciated. I might even bring my lockpick so you can enjoy the pleasures o f a Sunday swinging session. On the swings. None of that dodgy stuff you read about in the English tabloids. ... more >>
